About Unlock PDF

SwiftPDFEdit removes password protection and permission restrictions from a PDF you are authorised to modify, entirely inside your browser. You supply the password the document already uses — or none at all, if it only carries printing and copying restrictions — and download a clean copy that opens and behaves normally in every reader.

A protected PDF you legitimately own is one of the most frustrating documents to work with. You know the password, you have every right to print the statement or copy a paragraph out of the report, and still every tool refuses to cooperate, prompting for the password again on every open and blocking the operations you need.

There are two kinds of protection and this tool handles both. A user password is required just to open the document — without it the file cannot be read at all, so you must supply it. An owner password leaves the document readable by anyone but flags it as no-printing, no-copying or no-editing; those restrictions are honoured by most readers as a convention rather than enforced by cryptography, and they are removed without any password once you confirm the document is yours to modify.

The operation runs on your own device using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly — the same well-established engine that command-line PDF work has relied on for years, running inside your browser tab rather than on a server. Your password is used locally to decrypt the file and is never transmitted, stored or logged, and neither is the document. Only the encryption and permission flags are stripped: text, images, fonts, form fields and layout are copied across untouched, so the unlocked file is visually identical to the original.

To be explicit about what this is not: it cannot recover, guess or crack a password you do not have, and it never will. Password recovery is a different activity with a different purpose, and we have deliberately chosen not to build it. Unlocking is part of the Premium plan ($15/month or $79/year); once a document is unlocked you can merge, compress, edit or redact it with the rest of the toolkit.

How to remove a password from a PDF

  1. Open the Unlock PDF tool

Go to swiftpdfedit.com/unlock-pdf and sign in. Unlocking is part of the Premium plan.

  2. Add your protected PDF

Drag the locked PDF onto the upload area or click to browse. SwiftPDFEdit inspects how the file is protected as soon as it loads, on your device.

  3. Enter the password if one is required

If the document needs a password to open, type the one you already use. If it only carries printing or copying restrictions, no password is needed.

  4. Confirm you are allowed to remove the protection

Tick the confirmation box to state that you own the document or are authorised to modify it.

  5. Unlock and download

Click Unlock PDF. qpdf-WASM decrypts the file in your browser and the unrestricted copy downloads immediately.

Questions

Unlock PDF — frequently asked questions

Open this tool, add the protected file, type the password you already use to open it, confirm that you are authorised to remove the protection, and click Unlock PDF. The decrypted copy is produced in your browser and downloads immediately — the file and the password are never uploaded.

No, and that is deliberate. The tool removes protection from documents you can already open — either because you know the password or because the file only carries permission restrictions. It does not crack, guess or brute-force an unknown password, and we will not add that capability.

Neither. Your file never leaves your device — all processing happens locally in your browser. Your password is used only inside your browser tab to decrypt the file locally, and is discarded the moment you leave the page.

A user password is required just to open the document — without it, nothing can read the file. An owner password leaves the document readable by anyone but flags it as no-printing, no-copying or no-editing. This tool removes both, though only the first requires you to supply a password.

For documents you own or are authorised to modify, yes — it is the standard behaviour of every commercial PDF suite, which is why we ask you to confirm it before unlocking. Removing protection from someone else's confidential document without permission is not what this tool is for.

No. Only the encryption and permission flags are stripped. Text, images, fonts, form fields and layout are copied across untouched, so the unlocked file is visually identical to the original.

Yes — unlocking is part of the Premium plan ($15/month or $79/year), which also includes the AI assistant, batch processing, Office conversions and e-signature requests. Merging, splitting, compressing, converting, rotating and the editor are available on the free plan.

Yes. qpdf runs as WebAssembly inside the browser, so unlocking works on mobile as well as desktop; very large encrypted files are limited by the phone's memory.
